Lake in the Hills Summer Sunset Festival kicks off Friday

Carnival rides, wine tasting, live bands, Kids' Korner, a parade and fireworks are among the highlights of Lake in the Hills' 16th annual Summer Sunset Festival to be held this Labor Day weekend.

The festival kicks off Friday with a 5K run/2-mile walk and ends Sunday with a fireworks finale, 9:30 p.m. at Sunset Park, 5200 Miller Road.

"We probably expect about 200 participants of all ages," race director Kristi Brewer said.

Participants can register online at raceentry.com or on-site the day of the race. Registration is $35 per person and begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the race at 7 p.m. Individuals and teams of two or more can sign up. All participants get a T-shirt and a backpack and a finishers medal when they complete the race.

Those who register online can pick up race shirts and coupons from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation Department, 600 Harvest Gate.

The run has been going on for 15 years and helps support some of the parks and recreation department's free events offered throughout the year, Brewer said.

"It is not timed," Brewer said. "It is a fun run and walk. It's pretty easy for a beginner. We definitely encourage families to participate."

Festival attractions include a bags tournament, classic and custom car show, food vendors, talent show, and paint party.

Saturday's festivities begin with a parade at 10 a.m. from the corner of Grafton Farm and Miller roads, traveling east down Miller Road for 1 mile and ending at the corner of Albrecht and Miller roads. It will include a variety of performances from bands, martial arts and dance groups, colorful floats, clowns, and feature local organizations and businesses.

There will be wine tasting from 4 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday featuring selections from local wineries: Village Vinter, Fox Valley Winery, Wild Blossom Meadery & Winery, and Cooper's Hawk Winery. The cost is $10 per day.

The Kids' Korner will be buzzing with free activities Saturday and Sunday, featuring head to toe body art, a Bubbleologist, ice-eating contest, fire juggling and fire -eating magician, construction crafts, clown and balloon twisting, and an exotic animal show.

Organizers expect roughly 500 attendees each day, weather permitting. Visit summersunsetfest.com.
