Markets Right Now: Stocks edge lower on Wall Street

NEW YORK (AP) - The latest on developments in global financial markets (all times local):

Stocks are closing out their first losing month since February as a quiet summer continues on Wall Street.

A thin batch of earnings Wednesday gave investors little to get excited about.

Tax preparer H&R Block plunged 11 percent after reporting revenue that fell short of analysts' estimates.

Distiller Brown-Forman, which makes Jack Daniels and Finlandia vodka, fell 4 percent after its own results also came up short of forecasts.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 53 points, or 0.3 percent, to 18,400.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 5 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,170. The Nasdaq composite edged down 9 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,213.

Bond prices fell slightly. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.58 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 9 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,166. The Nasdaq composite fell 18 points, or 0.4 percent, to 5,204.

Bond prices didn't move much. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 1.57 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 4 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,171. The Nasdaq composite fell 12 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,210.

Bond prices didn't move much. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 1.57 percent.
