Downtown Long Grove to Host Irish Days

Historic downtown Long Grove will pay homage to the Emerald Isle this Labor Day weekend.

All Irish Eyes will be smiling when the shopping district of Long Grove presents Irish Days, a celebration of Irish culture, music, food and drink.

The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Old McHenry and Robert Parker Coffin roads. Admission and parking in municipal lots are free.

Featured performers include: Rory Makem, The Shannon Rovers Bagpipe Band, The Dooley Brothers, The McNulty Irish Dancers, Gavin Coyle, The Chancey Brothers, Joe Cullen and Kathleen Keane, and the Larkin Brothers, and many more.

A favorite sight is the Irish dog competition, where those who dress the part are given extra credit. Enter at the competition area by the Long Grove Information Center, 308 Old McHenry Road, by 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and by 1:30 p.m. Monday. Each day, a panel of children will crown an Irish Doggie King, Queen, Prince and Princess.

A "Wee Ones" area will host Irish-themed storytelling, crafts, face-painting and games for kids. The biggest laughs may be at the "Best Looking Men's Legs in a Kilt" contest at 1:20 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 11:55 a.m. Monday in Fountain Square. Contestants should preregister in the morning.

To top it off, Irish Days will include a townwide "Where's Paddy?" leprechaun hunt each day in the village's independent businesses. Besides specials at shops, including two Irish stores family operated for 41 years, Irish Days will feature a Gaelic Tent in Fountain Square with representatives from the Irish American Heritage Center to promote awareness of Irish language and genealogy.
