Boys soccer: Vernon Hills edges out Lakes

Chris White scored his seventh goal of the season and assisted Aaron Castellanos for the game-winner, as Vernon Hills' boys soccer team edged visiting Lakes 2-1 in a nonconference match Tuesday night.

Anakin Ruiz assisted White on the first goal for Vernon Hills (5-2). Brennan Reback made 5 saves in net for the Cougars.

"I thought we played very well tonight," Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said. "We did a good job keeping the ball, and both of our finishes were fantastic. We know it's still early on and players are learning everyday, but we were happy with the team chemistry all over the field tonight. Lakes is a good team with a lot of speed that loves to counter. I thought for the most part we limited the counter by getting numbers behind the ball. It was a good team win."

Cam Beezely scored his sixth goal of the season for Lakes (1-3). Jake Keenan had the assist. Eagles keeper Wade Parmly made 8 saves.

Warren 3, Carmel 1: Hugo Flores scored twice for the Blue Devils in the nonconference match.

Kevin Penarrieta also scored for Warren (4-0-1), which got assists from Mike Bassier, Kody Anderson and Ruben Delgadillo. Jeffery Pioquinto had 5 saves in net for the Blue Devils.

Grayslake North 1, Cary-Grove 0: At Grant, the Knights opened the tournament with the shutout win.

Senior Cristian Guerrero scored the lone goal, on a header, off an assist from freshman Logan Holevas in the first half.

"Today we showed a lot of positives as we worked really well as a unit behind the ball and, as a result, we played much more confidently and with much more purpose in our attack," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "We were able to create some early chances to put Cary-Grove under pressure and really only allowed opportunities on the counter attack. Once we started to close down their midfielders and defenders a bit quicker, we really limited their opportunities to attack us as a whole."

Grayslake North senior keeper Bryce Boyd made 4 saves in earning the shutout.

Harvard 5, Grant 1: At Grant, Danny Talavera tallied a penalty kick for the Bulldogs' lone goal in their tournament opener.

Antioch 0, Woodstock North 0: Alex Ruano made in 3 saves in net to earn the shutout for the visiting Sequoits in the nonconference match.

Antioch is 1-2-1.

Wauconda 7, North Chicago 0: At Wauconda, the host Bulldogs cruised in their tournament opener.
