Terre Haute couple celebrates 75th wedding anniversary

TERRA HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana couple is celebrating 75 years of marriage with an open house at the senior community where they reside.

Elwood Endicott and his wife Clara, in their 90s, were married Aug. 27, 1941.

The (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/2c0pZT4 ) they were high school sweethearts. Their first date was a school Latin club feast.

But they had a rocky start to married life, eloping at ages 17 and 16 in Kentucky without family knowing. Clara's father objected and the two were briefly separated before they went to Illinois to repeat their vows.

Elwood Endicott says there's no secret to their long union, saying it's about "family and love."

They raised four daughters and have 13 grandchildren, about 30 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

The celebration is Sunday at The Wyndmoor.
