Show in St. Charles features nearly 1,200 dogs

The Elgin Kennel Club opened its 24th annual American Kennel Club all-breed dog show Saturday at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles. The show, featuring nearly 1,200 dogs and more than 135 breeds, continues 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

"Not only is this a fun activity for families, but it is the perfect place to talk to breed experts about topics such as training, grooming and the right breed for your lifestyle. An AKC dog show is also a great place to start your search for a responsible breeder," Heidi McClure, public relations chairwoman, said before the show.

Prior to Best In Show judging Sunday, a bulletproof dog vest will be presented to Carpentersville Police K-9 Blitz and his handler Officer Jason Caudle. The vest cost $825, said Diane Keller, secretary of the Elgin Kennel Club.

Among the 101 breeds to see Sunday are the Irish red and white setter, Swedish Vallhund, Parson Russell terrier and the Cane Corso.
