Highwood's Sixth Annual Garlic Fest A Stinking Success

HIGHWOOD, IL (AUGUST 25, 2016) - Hosted by the Highwood Chamber of Commerce, the 6th Annual Highwood Garlic Fest attracted waves of people with the smell of garlic wafting through the air on Wednesday, August 24th. Garlic Fest showcased the beloved flavor of garlic, known for its culinary and medicinal purposes, while attendees sampled a variety of garlic creations from out-of-the-ordinary garlic infused chocolate, cookies, garlic rosemary funnel cake, and garlic infused cocktails, to the more classic, savory options like pastas, sandwiches, sauces and spreads.

The people voted for their favorite garlic bites and overwhelmingly awarded "Best Sweet Garlic Creation" to Susie Regan of Toadstool Pub for her Candied Garlic Bacon. "Best Savory Garlic Creation" went to Toadstool Pub for their Garlic Infused Vodka Bloody Mary.

Other garlic fan favorites included: Garlic Shortbread Sandwich Cookies from Bent Fork Bakery; Garlic Truffle Fries from The Fat Shallot; Garlic Infused Margaritas and Garlic Infused Mahi Mahi and Tuna Tacos from La Casa de Isaac; Garlic and Meat Empanadas from Olano's Empanadas; Spaganini (a panini sandwich with spaghetti, mozzarella cheese, homemade garlic meat sauce and fresh roasted garlic butter) from Pat's Catering and Canning; Garlic Parmesan Popcorn from Popcorn Jester; Garlic Infused White Chocolate Truffles from Puna Chocolate; and Garlic Rosemary Funnel Cakes from Tres Flores Funnel Cakes.

The Highwood Chamber of Commerce also crowned Shannon Schine its Garlic Queen and 11 year old, Lexi Golding, a 6th grader at Northwood Jr. High, its Garlic Princess. The winners were awarded bragging rights and presented with a sash and tiara by judges Courtney Jacquin of Highland Park Landmark; Patti Vasquez, Esmeralda Leon and Dr. Charles Turk of WGN Radio; past Garlic Queen Pat Lenzini, and past Garlic Princesses Sabrina Stefani and Nora Blount. The new Garlic Queen and Princess will represent the City of Highwood at upcoming events throughout the year.

Also joining the Festival was the Highwood Historical Society's Terrific Tomato Contest. In its 9th year, Mrs. Yones Lawler from Highwood won the "Most Terrific Tomato in Town" and a $100 gift certificate donated by Sunset Foods, and Diane Vanderpal from Highwood took home the People's Choice award.
