Construction closes roads in Algonquin

Two roads in Algonquin are being closed for reconstruction work.

Work began this week on a Highland Avenue reconstruction project, closing a section of the Algonquin roadway for months.

Improvements to a roughly seven-tenths of a mile stretch of the road include removing and replacing the pavement, updating the storm sewer and detention area, and installing new curbs and gutters, according to an Algonquin news release.

Project plans also include replacing part of the sidewalk, resurfacing a parking lot at Presidential Park and creating a new multiuse train along the road.

To accommodate construction, Highland Avenue is shut down to through traffic from Tanglewood Drive to Haegers Bend Road through December, officials said. Until then, traffic will be redirected to Route 62 by way of Haegers Bend Road and Countryside Road.

Construction costs, estimated at $1.9 million, are funded by Algonquin, Barrington Hills and the Illinois Department of Transportation, officials said. The project is expected to be mostly complete by the end of the year, though minor reconstruction work will continue next spring.

Beginning Wednesday, Stonegate Road will be closed between Sawmill Lane and County Line Road through November for construction on a roughly six-tenths of a mile section of the roadway.

The project includes removal and replacement of the existing road surface, including spot curb and gutter, driveway, and sidewalk replacements.

Detour routes are posted with through traffic being redirected to Hanson Road via Harnish Drive and County Line Road. Local traffic will be permitted access to homes in the area during the roadwork.

The construction cost for the project is roughly $589,000 funded by the village. Work is scheduled to be completed in November.
