Man accused of shooting at cop says he should've killed him

CHICAGO (AP) - A man accused of shooting at a Chicago police officer lashed out during his bail hearing, telling a judge he should have "smoked" the officer after being ordered held without bond.

Kentrell Pledger, who is charged with attempted murder, told Cook County Circuit Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. the officer shot at him first. After Pledger's comment Tuesday, the judge told a court reporter to "write it down."

Prosecutors say patrolling officers on Monday saw the 29-year-old Pledger fidgeting with his belt. They pulled alongside the suspect and a uniformed officer started asking him questions.

Pledger ran away as he allegedly fired twice at a pursuing officer. The officer, who wasn't injured, returned fire.

Pledger was arrested after he was found hiding under a porch. A gun was also recovered. It wasn't immediately known if Pledger has legal representation.
