Learn about Lords Park Zoo with Elgin Woman's Club

The Elgin Woman's Club will open their 2016-17 season with its first meeting and program of the year at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Villa Olivia Country Club, Route 20 and Naperville Road in Bartlett. Chairwoman for the luncheon is Patricia Gering, club president, and program chairman for the September meeting is Jan Kane.

The program will feature a presentation on the history of the Lords Park Zoo by Marge Rowe and Sue Brigham, Friends of Lords Park Zoo board members. Rowe is also a past president of the Elgin Area Historical Society and Brigham is secretary for the Friends of Lords Park Zoo.

Reservations should be made by calling the club hotline at (847) 622-3614. Cost for the luncheon meeting and program is $20 and may be paid for by check the day of the meeting.

The club meets monthly from September to May at local restaurants for luncheon meetings and programs. Women interested in receiving more information about the club may also call the hotline.

This year, the Elgin Woman's Club is celebrating its 129th anniversary, having been founded in 1887 and one year later, opened Sherman Hospital, which they continue to support. Since the club was organized members have also supported hundreds of local projects including yearly scholarships to students from area high schools. In addition, members serve as readers in local schools, volunteers in hospitals and other agencies throughout the Elgin area and are active in recycling, conservation, women's health, international affairs and other projects.
