Nostalgia keeping Rolling Meadows developer 'at Bay'

A small but vocal group of residents got its wish of keeping South Bay, a senior living community, off Kirchoff Road in Rolling Meadows.

The city council voted 5-1 against the zoning change, leaving no choice for the developer but to walk away from the project.

The parcel of land along Kirchoff Road has sat virtually empty for the past 12 years. The group opposed to the project wants to see the property kept commercial.

They hearken back to the days when diners, picture show palaces and bowling alleys defined the suburban landscape.

So to those opposed I say, in the future as they stroll along Kirchoff Road, "Oh Henry" candy bar in hand, drinking a grape Nehi, listening to the theme of "Happy Days" playing from their Walkmans - enjoy the view.
