Don't resume sending license reminders

After almost a year of suspending license plate renewal notices and now with fresh budget money at their disposal, the Illinois secretary of state is reinstating them.

If I am not mistaken, the state saves around $500,000 a month by stopping this practice, and has reaped millions in penalties for those who failed to note the change.

By now, everyone is accustomed to the lack of notices and either signed up for the electronic notices or simply takes responsibility for remembering when to renew, with the due date right on the sticker.

The state should just save the $500,000 each month and permanently stop sending notices. Those who worry about the state making money from fines should realize it will dissipate as car owners adjust to being accountable for themselves.
