RSL beats Dallas to tighten MLS West race

SANDY, Utah (AP) - Real Salt Lake's Jamison Olave scored in the 78th minute to secure a 1-0 home win against Dallas, tightening the race for top spot in Major League Soccer's Western Conference.

Third placed Real Salt Lake moved within five points of leader Dallas, separated by Colorado, which was held to a scoreless draw at home against Orlando City.

In the Eastern Conference, New York City remained a point clear on top by beating Los Angeles in a game played at baseball's famous Yankee Stadium. Toronto kept up the pressure by winning 3-1 at Philadelphia.

Dallas looked like extending its unbeaten streak to five games until Olave struck.

Moments after Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz made diving save of a shot by Joao Plata, Javier Morales played a cross into the area. Aubrey David attempted to clear with a header, but Olave trapped it with his chest a blasted it home.

Colorado missed a chance to move level with Dallas when it was held at home by Orlando City.

Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard has kept a clean sheet in half of the eight games he has played since returning from a long stint in the Premier League.

New York City's David Villa scored in the sixth minute and that was enough to secure a 1-0 win against Los Angeles.

City has not beaten in almost a month while the Galaxy had been unbeaten in nine games.

Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop blocked Ronald Matarrita's low shot, yet Villa was right in front of the goal to tap in the deflection.

Toronto's Sebastian Giovinco scored his league-leading 16th goal to lead the Canadian club to a 3-1 win at Philadelphia.

Giovinco slipped behind the defense on a counterattack, and blasted a left footer off the post to open the scoring in the 18th minute.

Drew Moor and Jozy Altidore also scored for Toronto while Ken Tribbett scored for the Union.

Sporting Kansas City Benny Feilhaber scored and set up Jacob Peterson's goal in a 2-0 victory over Vancouver.

Chicago secured its first away victory in more than two years by winning 3-0 at Montreal, with goals from Luis Solignac, David Accam and Matt Polster.

Columbus' Ethan Finlay and Federico Higuain scored as Columbus beat New England to snap a 10-game winless streak.
