Woman charged with hate crime in eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - A 54-year-old white woman is charged with a hate crime for allegedly using a racial epithet against a black man in eastern Illinois.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette and (Charleston) Times-Courier reports (http://bit.ly/2bMAduE ) Diana C. Yamamoto appeared in court Thursday and an attorney was appointed to represent her.

She's allegedly threatened to "hang him from a tree and kill him" on Aug. 8. The Effingham man was allegedly at a residence in Charleston to give video games to one of the residents.

If convicted of the felony, Yamamoto could face up to five years in prison. She's due in court Aug. 29

Some court records list an address for Yamamoto in Dickinson, North Dakota. A 2011 Coles County traffic violation case shows a Charleston address for her.
