ELCA congregations to volunteer on Day of Serving

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Schaumburg will be participating in "God's Work. Our Hands" which is a churchwide Day of Serving on Sunday, Sept. 11. Members from the congregation will be visiting nine area nursing homes and rehabilitation centers.

They will be playing bingo, bringing refreshments and prizes and engaging with people and families to bring something special to them. It also happens to be Grandparent's Day and this is an opportunity for every one of all ages to participate, from the youngest kids to the most senior adults.

"It raises the spirits of our residents and staff. They all look forward to the yellow T-shirts and smiling faces of the volunteers coming back every year," said Jenna Myrczik, from Lexington Health Care in Bloomingdale.

Across the country, thousands of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America members are being called to put their faith in action by boldly engaging in service activities in their local areas to make a positive change and deepen the congregations' experiences in their communities. ELCA members will play a critical part in addressing community needs by restoring and reconciling communities, building and deepening relationships, pursing peace and justice, and sharing God's love.

For more than 25 years, the ELCA is a church deeply rooted in faith and in sharing its passion for making positive changes in the world. The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with more than 3.8 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of "God's work. Our hands," the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA's roots are in the writings of the German church reformer, Martin Luther.
