Navy League takes part in North Chicago Community Days

Submitted by Jim Moran

The North Chicago Community Days wrapped up another successful run recently. The annual event is held at Foss Park in North Chicago. This year's festivities were centered on family fun entertainment, including; a 5K run, a car show, musical acts and fireworks.

A first for this year was the participation in Community Days by the Naval Station Great Lakes-based Navy League. The Navy League was founded nationally to promote the nation's sea services. The Navy League also sponsors the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corp. Locally, The Sea Cadet program is open to any 11-18 year old who is interested in the program and can make the meetings at the Great Lakes Naval base.

Navy League Chairman Ted Rock was on hand most of the weekend for the North Chicago Community Days. Rock says the Navy League wanted to participate in the event to help promote the League's initiative of encouraging S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education opportunities in North Chicago. The centerpiece of the Navy League's outreach this past weekend were pictures and a recap of the Navy's SeaPerch program. SeaPerch is targeted to school-aged children and designed as an opportunity for them to learn about technology, engineering and math applications through the building and operation of small, remotely controlled underwater submarines.

The participation by the Navy League also represents the growing collaboration and relationship between the Naval Station Great Lakes and the city of North Chicago. North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham explained that Community Days is now in its 11th year and each year the festival and participation has expanded.

"We've always had participation from Naval Station Great Lakes at Community Days, I am pleased that this year we also have the Navy League," he said.
