Man charged in shooting of police officer during chase

CHICAGO (AP) - A man accused of shooting a Chicago police officer following an alleged carjacking has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Police say officers responded to a report of a carjacking late Tuesday and began following a vehicle believed to be the one stolen. The driver, later identified as 24-year-old Charles Lawson, began shooting at them. A bullet grazed an officer, who was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center for treatment.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the officers fired back. Lawson was not wounded, but he crashed the SUV.

Police released video of the chase, which shows shots fired from the vehicle being pursued, the driver tossing out a gun and then exiting the SUV and dropping to the ground.

It wasn't immediately known if Lawson has legal representation
