Developer will break ground on Wheeling Town Center this fall

After about four years of planning, ground will be broken on the $110 million Wheeling Town Center development at the intersection of Dundee Road and Northgate Parkway this fall.

Developer Brad Friedman announced a new timeline for the development at Monday's village board meeting and revealed the center's retail anchor will be a CMX movie theater.

The development also will include a 300-unit, five-story residential building. The theater and residential building are expected to be completed by spring of 2018.

"This truly will be a destination spot for us," Wheeling Village President Dean Argiris said.

The 10-screen theater, which will have the right to show first-run movies, will have 780 seats. As in other CMX theaters, guests will sit in oversized chairs and have the option to dine and imbibe in a lounge.

Lettuce Entertain You will partner with CMX for dining options in the theater.

Friedman said he has heard interest in the town center from other potential retail tenants, including Starbucks, Potbelly, AT&T, Weber Grill and Andy's Frozen Custard.

"I've been dreaming of businesses like this," Trustee Ken Brady said. "I'm ecstatic and can hardly wait."

It wasn't always smooth sailing for Friedman. He faced setbacks throughout the approval process, including recently working out an agreement with the Wheeling Park District on infrastructure for water, sewer and floodwater management in an easement that runs between the Town Center and park district property.

"A lot of agreements needed to be worked out for us to break ground," Friedman said.

Argiris also acknowledged Monday that Friedman faced several hurdles in getting the project to where it is now.

"You got beat up by me and other people," Argiris said to Friedman.

Despite the challenges, Friedman said Monday the town center will be on a "wonderful site with fantastic neighbors."
