Spain rolls past Canada 73-60 in women's basketball

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Alba Torrens scored 20 points and helped Spain finish second in Group B by beating Canada 73-60 and ensuring they avoid playing the Americans until at least the gold medal game in women's basketball.

Now Spain (4-1) will play Turkey in the quarterfinals Tuesday, while Canada (3-2) plays France with a potential matchup against the U.S. in the semifinals Thursday. Neither Spain nor Canada has finished better than fourth at the Olympics.

Spain scored the first five points and never trailed. Spain opened the third quarter with a 14-6 run only to see the Canadians came scrapping back with their own 12-2 run to pull within 49-47 at the end of the quarter.

Marta Xargay opened the fourth with a 3. By the time Kia Nurse, a guard who will be a junior at UConn this fall, hit a free throw with 4:34 for Canada, Spain led 60-48.

Nirra Fields led Canada with 13 points.
