Marion mother sues, claims special ed student locked in room

MARION, Ill. (AP) - The mother of a southern Illinois special education student has filed a federal lawsuit claiming her child was inappropriately locked in a small room at school.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports (http://bit.ly/2be1x30 ) that Marionna Felts-Ping filed the lawsuit as a co-defendant with her son, identified in the lawsuit as J.P. Felts-Ping's lawsuit claims a teacher and teacher's aide unnecessarily confined her son in a small room for extended periods. The lawsuit says the incidents caused "emotional, educational and behavioral injuries."

The lawsuit names as defendants Williamson County and Marion school and education entities as well as several teachers, aides and administrators. Williamson County and Marion school officials declined comment citing pending litigation.

Plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. Felts-Ping also has filed complaint with the Illinois State Board of Education.
