Three injured in Elgin crash

Three people were injured, with two of them requiring extrication, after an SUV crashed into a semitruck, lodging its hood and front wheels under the truck, at the Elgin toll plaza on eastbound I-90 Friday morning.

One passenger in the backseat left the car herself and was in fair condition. The two passengers in the front seats were extricated after 90 minutes and were in serious condition. All were transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin. Two firefighters were treated and released at the scene for heat exhaustion.

According to a release from the city of Elgin, firefighters were called to the scene at 10:45 a.m.

The city said the semi was traveling through the cash lanes when the SUV reportedly was unable to stop.

The cash-only lanes were closed during the incident and all traffic was directed to the I-pass lanes.

The incident is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
