Women now comprise nearly third of Rose-Hulman freshmen

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Women now account for nearly a third of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's freshman class some two decades after the school went coed.

Preliminary enrollment figures show that a record 172 women will be part of this fall's incoming freshmen class at the Terre Haute campus. That's nearly 30 percent of the 565-student freshmen class.

The Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/2b0q3Sw ) the new women students are choosing some of Rose-Hulman's most rigorous fields, including engineering physics, computer science and biomedical engineering.

Rose-Hulman was a men's college for more than 120 years until it began admitting women in 1995.

Vice president for enrollment Jim Goecker says Rose-Hulman has been reaching out to young women on social media, but K-12 schools are also placing a growing emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
