Prospect Heights Block Party marks key anniversaries

The Prospect Heights Park District, celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the City of Prospect Heights, celebrating its 40th anniversary, are hosting their annual block party from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Lion's Park, 110 W. Camp McDonald Road.

The event starts promptly at 4 p.m. with the Prospect Heights Wheeling Youth Baseball/Softball sponsored Treasure Hunt. Children of all ages may participate in this free hunt for treasures on the ballfield.

The Prospect Heights Voice Singing competition will begin at 5 p.m.

Children's inflatables will be available from 5 to 9 p.m., with wristbands $10 or $2 per feature.

Food trucks are a new addition at this year's block party, with treats from Cupcakes for Courage, Mario's Cart & the Pit Stop, The Cajun Connoisseur and Toasty Cheese offered from 5 to 10 p.m. There also will be a beer tent.

Attendees can swim free in Lion's Pool from 6 to 8 p.m., then enjoy the Lions Club Duck Race at 8 p.m.

The lineup of live music starts with the band Soda at 7 p.m. performing classic rock, '80s, new wave, Motown and alternative. The headliner is Billy Elton at 9 p.m. Prospect Heights native Reid Spears is lead vocalist and pianist for this Billy Joel and Elton John tribute band.

The Prospect Heights Water Committee will be at the block party, too, with free giveaways and a chance to meet representatives from the Well Water and SSA (Lake Michigan water) subcommittees.

You can learn about the work they are doing regarding safety, purification and improvement of well water, as well as the process involved for bringing Lake Michigan water to interested neighborhoods. Committee members can answer questions, listen to concerns and provide information packets.

A variety of other community organizations such as Rotary, Lions, police, fire, library, St. Alphonsus School and Harper College also will be distributing information or providing activities.
