Board of Education to hold hearings on 2 Indiana schools

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The State Board of Education will hold a pair of public hearings in northwestern Indiana for schools that have been placed in the lowest category of school improvement for five consecutive years.

The meeting on Beveridge Elementary School is scheduled for Wednesday in Gary while the hearing for John Block Junior High School in East Chicago is scheduled for Thursday. The meetings will include presentations by the Department of Education and the local school corporation, followed by public comment.

Among the options the board could consider are releasing a school from turnaround status, continue working with current operator, assign a new operator, or return a school to the district as an innovation network school. The hearings are required under state law.

No decisions are expected at the hearings.
