Former East Peoria football coach convicted of theft

PEKIN, Ill. (AP) - A former East Peoria Community High School football coach will be sentenced next month after a judge found him guilty of stealing thousands of dollars meant for the students and the team.

The Pekin Daily Times (http://bit.ly/2aPk3Md ) reports that Tazewell County Judge Paul Gilfillan found 38-year-old Doug Martin guilty of four counts of felony theft on Friday.

Martin testified that used virtually he spent all of the money on team expenses and only put it in a private bank account because it was more convenient than putting it into the team's student activity fund.

Assistant State's Attorney Mike Holly said he didn't believe Martin spent the money on the team and added that even if he did, he didn't have the right to decide where to spend school money.
