Elgin man charged with attempting to lure a child

A 25-year-old Elgin man has been charged with attempting to lure a child after a 16-year-old girl was repeatedly accosted on July 19 in the area of Walnut Avenue and Elm Street in Elgin, police said Saturday.

Baltazar Pu of the 500 block of West Highland Avenue was taken into custody Friday night and interviewed by investigators. The felony charge was filed after reviewing the facts with the Kane County state's attorney's office, police said in a news release. Pu appeared in Kane County bond court Saturday morning. He needs to post 10 percent of $100,000 to be eligible for release.

Police gave this account:

About 8:40 a.m. July 19, the girl walked past a parked vehicle occupied by an adult male she didn't know. The occupant attempted to initiate a conversation. She ignored the man and continued to walk. The subject followed her in his vehicle and continued to offer her a ride, which she refused. The subject then left the area.

In a subsequent investigation, a suspect was identified by an Elgin police officer who saw a vehicle matching the description given by the victim, police said.
