Historical museum recruits Pokemon Go players

UNION - Pokemon Go, the new smartphone phenomenon that requires players to walk and explore neighborhoods near and far in order to secure a roster of Pokemon characters, has ties to many historical buildings. So it made sense for the McHenry County Historical Society to embrace the phenomenon.

"This a fun opportunity to connect with young people before school starts and for reinvigorating landmarks in the county," said exhibits curator Kira Halvey. "The game gives them an incentive to go to these historic landmarks they weren't visiting before."

The free mobile app uses a phone's GPS data and camera to place Pokemon characters amid the real world. Once located, players - who use avatars called "trainers" - "capture" the characters with their phones.

Pokemon trainers are invited to catch 'em from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the McHenry County Historical Society Museum, 6422 Main St. in Union. There are more than 100 Pokemon in Pokemon Go. They range from Bulbasaur to Blastoise, Squirtle to Pidgeotto.

The museum campus has five "PokeStops" - the main museum and its sign, its annex building, West Harmony School, and the bell - and lures are being dropped for three hours to attract Pokemon. When a Lure Module is activated, all nearby players can see it on their map, so they can head to the lure and take advantage of the increased amount of Pokemon in an area.

Looking to stay cool? Pokemon trainers receive free admission to the museum. Hatch your eggs by walking around the museum visiting our exhibits. Free Wi-Fi and a charging station will be available inside the museum. Battle other Pokemon trainers at the three virtual "gyms," within walking distance of the museum. Post your pictures on social media using #MCHSPokemon and be entered to win a "Historic Country Schools of McHenry County" history book.
