Northwest suburbs mark National Night Out

Many Northwest suburbs on Tuesday celebrated National Night Out, an annual event designed to prevent crime and drug abuse and strengthen police-community partnerships. In Arlington Heights, police showcased K-9 work while the fire department demonstrated vehicle extrication at North School Park. Parents could get a free CD containing their child's fingerprints, photograph and voice sample, and also request a DNA sample.

The park district provided food, beverages and children's games.

In Schaumburg, police officers, state representatives and fire personnel met with people at Meineke Recreation Center, where there were silly games, contests, sidewalk chalk play, a DJ and an open swim.

Other towns that were celebrating included Bartlett, Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Hoffman Estates, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights and Rolling Meadows.

Barrington plans to celebrate from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at its Cruise Night on South Cook Street.
