Stakeout ends: Elgin police detain one man on National Street

Elgin police took a man into custody early this morning more than seven hours after responding Friday to what police Cmdr. Ana Lalley called a “domestic incident with a possible weapon.”

Lalley said police were dispatched to the 200 block of National Street around 5 p.m. They remained there late into the night, past midnight.

Police on the scene said nobody had been hurt. Police were seen detaining the man and placing him in an ambulance.

Various police officers and a tactical response team were on the scene, and Elgin Fire Department vehicles were there as well.

Lalley said more details would be coming soon this morning.

Images and video on a Facebook page showed an area containing homes and some businesses blocked off by police. Videos showed police regularly calling out, via loudspeaker, to anyone inside the home, saying police wanted to check on anybody's well-being and asking anyone to show that they were OK.

The Elgin Police Department warned on its Facebook page earlier to “please avoid the area of Raymond/National/Villa St.” “The scene is contained,” the post said.
