Bison born at Midewin prairie in Illinois; herd now at 37

WILMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - A bison has been born at Midewin (MIH'-dih-wihn) National Tallgrass Prairie.

Midewin officials spotted the calf Tuesday during routine rounds. It had a bright orange coat, nursed and nuzzled its mother. Its umbilical cord was still attached.

The unexpected birth came months after the typical April-May bison birthing season. It brings the total herd number to 37.

Acting prairie supervisor Kurt Steele says each new arrival in the herd "has sparked enthusiasm among the community, Midewin volunteers and staff."

The herd was introduced to the prairie in October. It's part of a 20-year experiment to restore the prairie to conditions before human settlement.

Visitors seeking a glimpse of the bison should start at the welcome center and consult staff. Take binoculars and be prepared to hike some.
