Northern Indiana deputy wounds driver after chase

NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. (AP) - State police say a northern Indiana sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man after an apparent road rage dispute during which the man fired shots at another driver.

State police Sgt. Trent Smith says the Kosciusko (kahs-ee-AHS'-koh) County deputy was chasing the vehicles on Indiana 13 Wednesday evening from Syracuse when the deputy collided with one of the vehicles. The vehicle then crashed into a business building in the nearby town of North Webster.

Smith says the deputy shot the driver after approaching the crashed pickup truck, but the circumstances were still under investigation. He says the wounded man was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital. His name and condition weren't immediately released.

Smith says the deputy was treated at a local hospital for crash injuries.
