Donations, volunteers aide painting of 'Donna the Tank'

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Businesses and volunteers are teaming up in DeKalb to refurbish the commemorative armored tank in DeKalb's Memorial Park.

Dan Gallagher is commander of American Legion Post 66. He says residents and businesses provided generous donations and half-a-dozen painters will be out this weekend.

Gallagher told the (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle (http://bit.ly/2axglK4 ) that it's been about 70 years since the vehicle - nicknamed "Donna the Tank" - has been painted.

He says local businesses have provided heavily discounted paint, hardener for the paint and welding services for some openings to keep debris from getting inside and corroding the metal.

Volunteer painters include members of the American Legion and the Northern Illinois University veterans club.
