Afternoon storm floods streets, uproots trees in Palatine
Palatine firefighters and public works officials are dealing with the aftermath of this afternoon's thunderstorms that knocked down trees and power lines and flooded streets throughout the village.
Public Works Director Matt Barry said the initial storm hit the village about 1:30 p.m. and dropped about an inch of rain in about 30 minutes. By 4:15 p.m. the majority of the flooding had subsided, he said.
Most of the damage came from the accompanying high winds, which hit the east side of town hardest, Barry said.
He said crews were patrolling the village to make sure roads are free of debris, identify hazards and remove uprooted trees. Barry said crews had to take out four damaged trees, some of which had been uprooted and were leaning on private structures.
The village will have a special pickup for storm-related downed trees, limbs and brush for people living the affected area starting at 6 a.m. Monday. Fire Chief Scott Anderson said it does not appear the weather caused significant damage and there were no indications of anyone harmed by the sudden storms. He said there was one report of a car stuck at a flooded intersection.
