Naperville cops probe car burglaries; one charged

A 15-year-old Chicago boy has been charged with burglary, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, obstructing identification and resisting arrest as part of a Naperville police probe into a string of car thefts and break-ins, authorities said Wednesday.

Police said they found a vehicle that had been reported stolen around 5 a.m. Tuesday near Washington Street and Tamarack Drive and the teen was inside. They said the boy fled and was apprehended a short time later.

As their investigation continued, police said they learned a total of five vehicles had been stolen in the area, including the one they recovered. They also learned that burglars had entered roughly 30 other vehicles.

In addition, a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Chicago was found in the area.

Police said a vast majority of the vehicles that were burglarized or stolen had been left unlocked and the owners of some, including a 2007 Chevy Avalanche, a 2007 Saturn Ion, a 2007 Chrysler Sebring and a 2016 Audi L4, had left the keys inside.

Most of the cases took place in the Hobson West, West Highlands, Olympic Terrace and Maplebrook subdivisions.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the crimes to call the investigations division at (630) 420-6666.
