Witness shot before murder trial to testify when it resumes

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A witness who was shot before he could testify in a central Illinois murder trial is expected to testify when proceedings resume next month.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2a4i9qQ ) a judge on Monday allowed the trial of 19-year-old KyJuan Dorsey to resume Aug. 15. The trial ended in a mistrial last month when witness Demetrius Lane was shot. Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Lane is expected to testify when the trial resumes.

Lane was shot in the chest while sitting in a vehicle the day before proceedings were to begin Dorsey's first trial.

Dorsey is accused of accidentally shooting 18-year-old Jeremy O'Neal in a gang dispute last fall in Champaign.
