Are we ready to give up on democracy?

It's unimaginable that the presidency of this country can go from the sublimity of inspiration of one man to the ludicrous absurdity of another in one day. And yet, we're on the precipice of deciding to cause just that in November.

How can a nation so conceived in earth-shattering, lofty transformative ideals 227 years ago eradicate the intention of its founders, who wrote a constitution envisioned to serve all its citizens, not just a few?

Have we forgotten the principles on which this nation came into being?

The Constitution was written to overcome some of our natural tendencies to destroy ourselves. Our Revolutionary citizens read the history of vanquished civilizations and with deliberate intention didn't want to replicate their causes of destruction.

And yet, we may be in crisis. Are we prepared to capitulate the ideals of democracy for craven impulses driven by our more primitive nature discarding reason in favor of recklessness?
