3 things to watch as Democratic delegates arrive in Philly
With Republicans' party in Cleveland over, Democratic delegates are arriving in Philadelphia for their convention this week to nominate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as their nominee for president.
Here's what to watch for as the convention starts Monday.
• After a long primary season he eventually lost to Clinton, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders will look out upon the convention floor and see a lot of delegates elected to represent him.
In Illinois, he only narrowly lost to Clinton. Sanders has endorsed Clinton, but what will his specific message be? And how will Sanders' delegates react to days and days of Clinton praise?
• While top Illinois Republicans made news by skipping last week's convention, there's been no such talk on the Democratic side. Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is the party's state chairman and top statewide Democrats are on the delegate list. The list of planned convention speakers is changing often, but so far includes Geneva Reed-Veal, the mother of former Naperville woman Sandra Bland, who died more than a year ago in a Texas jail.
• The speaker list will build toward Clinton's Thursday acceptance of the nomination, a speech that voters might use to contrast with Republican Donald Trump's address last week as the fall campaign starts for real.
