Strong thunderstorms strike Chicago, suburbs

Strong thunderstorms with damaging winds, heavy rain and potential flooding struck Chicago and the suburbs Sunday.

In Chicago, a pedestrian walkway at the CTA Illinois Medical District station collapsed about 7 p.m. when high winds knocked over the structure onto the train tracks, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Though no injuries were reported, Blue Line trains were stopped in both directions, ABC 7 reports.

An urban and small stream flood advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect for northeast DuPage County, northern Cook County and southeast Lake County until 9:45 p.m., as well as for southeast DuPage County, north central Will County and southeast Cook County until 11:30 p.m.

Forecasters say excessive runoff from heavy rainfall can cause "ponding of water" on highways, streets, underpasses and other poor drainage and low lying areas.
