Fire heavily damages Wheaton garage

Unattended cooking appears to have caused a Friday afternoon fire that heavily damaged a detached garage in Wheaton, authorities said.

Crews from the Wheaton Fire Department responded about 3 p.m. to the 900 block of East Elm Street. When they arrived, the firefighters found the fire in the garage.

The fire was brought under control within minutes, officials said in a statement. No one was injured. Damage estimates were unavailable, but officials said the fire caused "extensive damage" to the garage. Wheaton fire investigators determined the fire was accidental.

The house on the property wasn't damaged.
