The Wheaton Municipal Band Welcomes 2 Special Guests
The Wheaton Municipal often invites special guests to the stage, but on Thursday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Park in downtown Wheaton, the Band welcomes two exceptional musicians: Ray Cramer and Dan Perantoni. What makes this concert extraordinary is that both renowned musicians come from one of the best music schools in the country-Indiana University. They join the Wheaton Municipal Band to present an exciting and unique concert.
Ray E. Cramer joined the faculty of Indiana University School of Music in1969 and retired in 2005. In 1982, Cramer became the Director of Bands. Under his leadership the Indiana University Wind Ensemble earned an international reputation for outstanding musical performances. Currently, Cramer presents clinics and guest and conducts nationally and internationally. He has served as regular guest conductor for the Musashino Academia of Music in Tokyo, Japan from the fall of 1990 to the present. Based on his experience in Japan, Cramer programmed for the concert, Bookmarks from Japan by Giroux. In addition, Cramer presents two works by the famous Argentinean composer, Piazzolla: Libertango and Nonino. Piazzolla revolutionized the Argentine tango into the nuevo tango, which incorporates elements of jazz and classical music. These hypnotic rhythms and harmonies have audiences swaying to the infectious beat. Also on the program are several lesser-known Sousa Marches, Strauss, Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Jesters, and highlights from Music Man.
The featured soloist is Dan Perantoni, Professor of Tuba at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His tuba artistry and pedagogue make him a trailblazer in a variety of genres, including work as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, jazz musician, and in instrument design. Perantoni has been a featured artist at Carnegie Hall, Monterey Jazz Festival, Spoleto Festival U.S.A., Adelaide Festival in Australia, Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, Montreux Brass Congress in Switzerland, and, recently, as soloist throughout Europe and Japan.
Perantoni also helped designed numerous tubas and mouthpieces. Perantoni performs Daniel in the Lions Den by McBeth.
