Bikers and walkers don't mix on narrow paths

Thank you, letter writer of "Walkers beware the paths at Melas Park" and thank you, Daily Herald, for printing it on July 5. We at Lake Arlington in Arlington Heights have been struggling with a similar situation for several years. A very narrow, 2-mile path around the lake was reconfigured after a town-hall meeting and now presents and even more dangerous and threating dilemma, especially for walkers.

Walkers can go in two directions and bikers go in one direction as they try to balance their bikes and bodies on the same ridiculously NARROW path. When a walker's back is to the bikers you never see them coming. In either direction they are ominously close to even a lone walker.

I have seen countless near-collisions and several people getting hurt. A few years ago a woman was killed by a speeding bike to her back. I appreciate that those on bikes are good people and do not intend to hurt anyone; they just want a day in the sun on their two-wheelers, but there is no room.
