For first time since 1968, White Sox shut out in three straight games

The Chicago White Sox have gotten solid starting pitching in each of their last three games, and they've all gone to waste.

Good pitching is supposed to lead to wins, but the White Sox's offense has had other thoughts.

The Sox lost to the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 Saturday night and have been shut out in three straight games for the first time since 1968.

Shields pitched 8 innings against the Angels and allowed 1 run on 2 hits, but it wasn't enough.

In Saturday night's 7-0 loss to Los Angeles, Miguel Gonzalez allowed 2 earned runs in 6 innings and had nothing to show for it.

Shields started for the White Sox last Sunday in the final game before the all-star break. The right-hander allowed 2 runs in 7⅔ innings but the Sox lost 2-0.

Dating back to their July 9 game against the Braves, the Sox have not scored a run in 32 innings.

“We need to get out of this and be better,” Adam Eaton told reporters after the White Sox's third straight loss. “It's unacceptable, to be honest with you.”

The Sox were perfectly positioned to end the scoreless drought in the ninth inning Saturday.

Eaton led off with a double, and that brought Jose Abreu to the plate. Abreu doubled twice earlier, but with the game on the line he grounded out to shortstop and failed to move Eaton up a base.

That proved costly when Melky Cabrera followed with a bloop single to left field, which only advanced Eaton to third.

Angels starter Matt Shoemaker struck out Todd Frazier and Justin Morneau to end the game. It was the right-hander's first career complete game.

Morneau made his first start for the White Sox and was 0-for-4 despite hitting the ball hard his first three trips to the plate.

The Sox optioned infielder Carlos Sanchez to Class AAA Charlotte after the game.

With Carlos Rodon (sprained left wrist) on the 15-day disabled list, the White Sox need a starter for today's game against Los Angeles. They are expected to call up Jacob Turner from Charlotte.

Turner was 4-7 with a 4.71 ERA in 18 starts for Charlotte this season. His last major-league start came in 2014, with the Cubs.

Turner's also pitched for the Marlins and Tigers.

Rodon threw off the mound Saturday and said his wrist is feeling better. He might need a rehab start before returning to the White Sox's rotation.
