'Healthy Tech' on display July 28 at Advocate Sherman Hospital

A robot that assists with surgery, a tiny implant that warns of heart failure, and your personal health information in the palm of your hand. These are just a few of the tech advances that will be on display at the Healthy Tech Fair from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at Advocate Sherman Hospital, 1425 N. Randall Road in Elgin. This event is free and open to the public. Light appetizers will be served and each attendee will receive a tech gadget giveaway. Register by calling (800) 3-ADVOCATE and mention code 10G89 or visit advocatehealth.com/shermanclasses.

The fair is an opportunity for the public to see and touch technology that is typically behind closed doors at the hospital. Some of the nation's top health care tech vendors will be on campus with interactive exhibits, along with Sherman Hospital physicians and other clinicians who are using it with their patients.

"Technology has greatly contributed to advancements in health care safety, quality, service and efficiency," said Dr. Bruce Hyman, vice president of medical management at Advocate Sherman Hospital. "The Healthy Tech Fair provides the public the opportunity to get an inside look at technology being used at Sherman Hospital to advance medicine and improve the health of our community."

A few of the exhibits that will be on display include:

• daVinci Xi Surgical System - the most advanced surgical robot on the market to assist surgeons with minimally-invasive surgery;

• CardioMEMs Heart Failure System - a tiny device implanted in the heart that sends warning messages to the patient and physician of onset of heart failure;

• NanoKnife Surgical System - the most advanced treatment on the market for late stage pancreatic cancer that is doubling life expectancy for these patients;

• MyAdvocate Patient Portal - one of the most robust and user-friendly self-service portals that allows patients access to their own health information and provides tools to help them manage their own health and easily communicate with their providers;

• Geothermal Lake - how geothermal technology can heat and cool a hospital and save over $1 million in energy costs a year.
