Aurora man with long record gets 15 years for severely beating girlfriend

An Aurora man with a long record of abuse was sentenced this week to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to a hourslong June 2015 attack on his girlfriend that left her with broken bones in her face and extended hospitalization because of bleeding on her brain.

Kane County Judge David Kliment Tuesday sentenced Gene A. Reynolds, 38, to prison and also signed an order of protection forbidding Reynolds from contacting the woman for six years after his prison term ends.

Reynolds has been in prison four times before and was on probation for domestic battery when he attacked the victim.

Kane County prosecutors presented evidence that on June 3, 2015, Reynolds was high on cocaine when he went to his girlfriend's home, became angry and severely beat her for hours.

Reynolds pleaded guilty in January to felony aggravated domestic battery and must serve 85 percent of the sentence — nearly 13 years — because of his previous criminal record, which includes six felony convictions and seven domestic violence convictions, according to prosecutors.

Reynolds gets credit for about 13½ months served at the Kane County jail while the case was spending.

Assistant State's Attorney Greg Sams prosecuted the case.

“Mr. Reynolds has had plenty of chances to address his violent behavior,” State's Attorney Joe McMahon said. “Because he has chosen not to, he poses a risk within the community. When he chose to ingest cocaine and then beat his girlfriend last June he nearly killed her. This sentence assures that the community will be safe from Mr. Reynolds for more than a decade.”
