Summer Celebration starts in Vernon Hills

Children hopped on the Sky Rider, Freefall and other carnival rides on the first day of Vernon Hills' Summer Celebration 2016 at Century Park.

This year's event also features food from local restaurants, games and musical entertainment.

On Thursday, Boy Band Review took the main stage at 7:30 p.m. and performed favorites from the 1990s. A spectacular fireworks show followed the music.

Friday's events include bingo at 8 p.m. and musical entertainment by Hello Weekend and Mike & Joe.

The Grammy-nominated band Smash Mouth will perform on Saturday night. Boxkar will be the opening act.

Also on Saturday's slate: a high-energy trivia game in the Kiddie Corner, a chance to give Vernon Hills police officers a pie in the face, a magic show and bingo.

Sunday will offer the third annual Car and Bike Show, the fourth annual bags tournament, bingo and entertainment from Beatles cover band Kaleidoscope Eyes.

Admission is free. The festival hours are 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, 1 to 11 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
