COD celebrates 50 years with food truck rally

Registration is now open for the 2016 College of DuPage Food Truck Rally & Sunset 5K on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The event features 15 popular Chicago and DuPage mobile eateries from noon to 8 p.m. on campus, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

In addition, a Kid Zone will host activities for the whole family from noon to 5 p.m., including a variety of games, face painting and Touch-a-Truck, where emergency vehicles, grounds equipment and semitrailers will be on hand for children to climb on.

The day also will include a free outdoor concert by Tributosaurus, a band that will perform the music of David Bowie staring at 6:30 p.m.

Advance registration is $19.67 for individuals (to commemorate COD's opening in 1967 and its 50th anniversary), $5 for current COD students (limitations apply) and $5 for the 100-Yard Youth Dash.

The registration fee for children ages 5 to 12 and participants older than 60 is $10. Participants who recruit three additional people to register for the event at the discounted price of $10 will receive a free race admission for next year's 2017 Food Truck Rally & Sunset 5K event.

The 100-Yard Youth Dash begins at 4 p.m. on the football stadium track and is for children 12 and younger, with two divisions - ages 4-7 and 8-12. The Sunset 5K will begin at 5 p.m. and features a CARA- and USATF-certified course.

Sunset 5K awards include a $200 Visa gift card for the top overall male and female racers and the "middle of the pack" winner. Medals also will be awarded to the top three male and female age group winners, with all 5K participants eligible to win an iPad.

Race participants can register individually or as a team. Prizes are awarded for the fastest team and the "Luck of the Draw." All 5K race participants receive a short-sleeved technical T-shirt, a gift bag and a $2 Food Truck Rally voucher.

All proceeds from the event benefit the COD Fuel Pantry, a sustenance resource on campus dedicated to ensuring COD students are not distracted from their studies by hunger.
