Mount Prospect Historical Society announces summer activities
Reading about the lives of our ancestors in books is one thing. Spending a day or a few hours experiencing some of the activities they did is another.
So the Living History Committee of the Mount Prospect Historical Society is once again offering children entering grades two through five the opportunity to step back in time for a few hours.
"Life as a Prairie Girl" was a huge hit last summer and it is back. From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 21, girls entering second through fourth grade are invited to visit the museum campus at 101 S. Maple St. to make dolls, try old-fashioned chores, make and drink real lemonade, and learn about helpful plants in the garden.
That afternoon, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., a follow-up session for those who enjoyed the program last summer will be offered for girls entering grades three through five. During "Prairie Girl II," participants will try their hand at sewing, make a no-bake summer treat, explore the gardens and more.
Space is limited and the cost is $25 per child, per session. The deadline for registration is Thursday, July 14.
Addison Kester, 9, of Elk Grove Village will undoubtedly be back because she enjoyed the Prairie Girl program so much last year.
"My favorite thing was getting to make yarn dolls because it made me feel what it was like back then compared to how things are now," she recalled.
Her mother, Janet Fuller Kester, a Mount Prospect native, added, "The girls really enjoyed their time as a Prairie Girl for the afternoon. It helped to put into perspective things they learned about from school and make it real for them. I know Addison would love to learn more about being a prairie girl."
The following week a totally new program, open to both boys and girls entering second through fifth grade, is planned. "The Science of History" will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 28, also on the museum campus.
The program will involve creating and learning about catapults. If time permits, they will play an old-fashioned game or two.
Space is limited for this program, too. The registration deadline is July 21 and the cost is $25 per child.

The Mount Prospect Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to preserving the history of Mount Prospect through artifacts, photographs and both oral and written memories of current and former residents and businesspeople.
On its campus, in the heart of the village, the Society maintains the 1906 Dietrich Friedrichs house museum and carriage house and an ADA-accessible education center. The society is also in the midst of an adaptive restoration of the 1896 one-room Central School, which was moved to the museum campus in 2008.
