Doctors to advocate plant-based diet at Veggie Fest

No more diabetes? Decreased risk of cardiovascular disease? Greater protection against cancer? Pipe dream or possibility?

Dr. Kim Allan Williams, Sr., president of the American College of Cardiology and chief of the Division of Cardiology of Rush University Medical Center, and Dr. Terry Mason, chief operating officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health, will both present their case for healing through a plant-based diet at Veggie Fest 2016 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, respectively.

Veggie Fest Chicago, one of the largest vegetarian food and lifestyle festivals in North America, will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 23 and 24 at the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center, 4045 Naperville Road, Lisle.

Veggie Fest speakers will present evidence that a plant-based diet is a lifestyle change that can change your life. Dr. Williams will speak on "Nutrition and Heart Disease: Taking the DIE out of Diet" at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and Dr. Mason will talk on "The Public Health Approach to Breast Cancer" at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Both are in the main tent.

In addition, Arran Stephens, CEO of Nature's Path Organics, will talk on "Global Warming and the Impact of Plant Based Solutions" at 5 p.m. Saturday.

He also will address how and why the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle has propelled the organic food industry from being barely a blip on the radar not that many years ago to a billion dollar food industry, growing exponentially every year.

Veggie Fest also features an international food court; health professionals speaking on diet, lifestyle, and environmental issues; food demos by restaurant owners, chefs, and authors; a children's tent with face painting, clowns, and crafts; live music; more than 100 vendor booths; and free admission and free parking,
