New Harper program combines career training with free support services

Harper College has launched a new program that provides students with an assortment of free support services while they train for a career.

The Integrated Career and Academic Preparation System (ICAPS) program is designed especially for those who are working toward their high school equivalency credential, need additional math or reading support, or are English as a second language speakers.

Students in these short programs can work quickly toward certificates in Certified Nursing Assistant, Office Assistant or Supply Chain Management/Logistics.

Information sessions will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, and at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the Harper College Learning and Career Center, 1375 S. Wolf Road in Prospect Heights.

In addition to the high school equivalency program and career and technical training, students receive support in study skills, career exploration, life balance, job search and internship experience.

"The students who can benefit the most often face unique challenges and are underserved," said Devin Chambers, Harper's Adult Educational Development Transition Coordinator. "These credentials can lead to better jobs, which in turn helps the community."

Classes take place during the day and evening at the Learning and Career Center. Students there have free use of computers, library, the internet and more. Scholarships and other financial aid options are available.
