Kitchen fire damages Bartlett condominium building

No injuries were reported Sunday night after fire broke out in a Bartlett condominium building, causing an estimated $47,000 in damages and leaving one unit uninhabitable.

According to the Bartlett Fire Protection District, firefighters responding at about 8:30 p.m. to the building in the 300 block of Wilmington Drive arrived to find black smoke coming from a third-floor unit. Firefighters located the fire in the unit's kitchen and put water on it with an extinguisher until a fire hose was brought up to extinguish it.

Crews evacuated the entire building, and performed ventilation and overhaul, fire officials said. The fire was contained to the one unit, but smoke occurred in the hallway and in several other condominiums, authorities said.

Fire Chief Michael Falese said smoke detectors went off during the fire, giving the residents notice to evacuate.

"Once again the importance of smoke detectors was highlighted," the fire district stated in a news release. "It is important that evacuation is followed when an activated smoke detector."

All residents were able to return except those who lived in the unit where the fire originated, which sustained moderate fire and smoke damage.
